Madison International School Strengthens Global Education

Contemporary education faces the challenge of preparing students to thrive in an ever-changing world, where critical thinking, adaptability, and intercultural understanding are essential. With this in mind, Mérida became the host city for the 2026 International Baccalaureate (IB) Regional Conference, one of the most significant professional development events for educators across the Americas.

From June 24 to 26, Madison International School welcomed nearly 100 teachers, coordinators, and school administrators from 23 schools across Mexico, the United States, Peru, Brazil, Colombia, Honduras, Costa Rica, and El Salvador. Participants attended nine specialized workshops focused on the different International Baccalaureate programmes: the Primary Years Programme (PYP), Middle Years Programme (MYP), Diploma Programme (DP), and Career-related Programme (CP).

The conference is part of the International Baccalaureate's global strategy to strengthen teaching practices through continuous professional development, the exchange of experiences, and the creation of international educational communities. Its approach is rooted in a fundamental principle: education goes beyond the transmission of knowledge to foster the development of essential life skills.

In this context, María Eugenia Robledo, Head of School at Madison International School, emphasized the significance of the school once again hosting this international event, highlighting its impact on the local educational community and Yucatán's growing recognition as an academic hub.

"Hosting an event like this represents an invaluable opportunity to strengthen connections with schools from different countries, enrich our teachers' professional development, and open the door to new learning experiences. The International Baccalaureate promotes an educational vision that transcends borders," she stated.

Robledo explained that the IB educational model is based on an inquiry-driven approach designed to develop reflective, critical thinkers with an international mindset, from the earliest years of schooling through upper secondary education. She added that this approach also transforms the way teachers teach by encouraging them to experience the same learning processes they are expected to foster in their classrooms.

One of the conference's central themes was ongoing professional development, recognized as an essential component of 21st-century education. Participants agreed that continuous teacher training enables educators to bring new pedagogical tools and strategies back to their schools, positively impacting students' learning experiences.

The conference also highlighted how the International Baccalaureate model responds to a global environment in which many of the careers of the future have yet to emerge. As a result, the priority extends beyond acquiring knowledge to developing essential skills such as communication, collaboration, research, self-management, and critical thinking.

This educational approach, implemented in more than 6,200 schools across 163 countries, aims to nurture young people who can understand diverse cultural perspectives, act responsibly, and contribute to building more just and peaceful societies.

Throughout the conference in Mérida, participants also emphasized the importance of continuous professional development as a process that supports teachers' ongoing growth and strengthens the consistency of the IB educational system worldwide. The standardization of its programmes also allows students to continue their education in different countries without disrupting their academic progress, while maintaining internationally aligned assessment standards.

For Madison International School, hosting this conference also represents recognition of its established position within the global International Baccalaureate network, as well as its commitment to bilingual, holistic, and internationally minded education.

The event also featured the active participation of Madison International School students, who served as part of the logistical support team. This experience reinforced the IB philosophy of learning through service, leadership, and community engagement.

Through this conference, Mérida reaffirms its position as a meeting point for international education, while Madison International School further strengthens its role as a key institution in promoting academic excellence in southeastern Mexico.
